A few weeks ago I lost my Mother. She was technically my Grandmother, but she raised me from birth. I didn’t know anyone else but her. She had Alzheimers, her death we knew was coming, but the pain is still shockingly hard the minute you have to face their death. Everything suddenly becomes real.
The saddest part is when it is time to comb through all of the pictures, trying to find the ones with her in it. These are the moments when we as Mother’s find out, there aren’t many. Truthfully, we are rarely the ones in the pictures, because we are always the ones taking the photo. This was one of the reasons I began my Self portrait series of myself and my children, and I cherish each one of the pictures.
Many of us are afraid to be in front of the camera; we don’t like the way we look that day, or we haven’t lost the weight, or excuse after excuse. This happens a lot and our kids childhood goes on being documented with us as the Mother not in it.
Mommy and Me sessions were born out of a desire to get Mom into the frame, and I love and look forward to them all year. However, my realization this year, is that taking a pretty picture with the kids is great and wonderful, and I Love doing them. I however, realized they don’t capture the truth about real Motherhood, they don’t capture the everyday, mundane moments that make up our lives. They don’t capture the moments that drive us nuts now, but we will desperately miss in the future.
I have decided that my Documentary heart needs to have this as a permanent session add on, and I would love and be honored if you will let me tell your story.
Motherhood sessions can be whatever you want them to be, from a nursing session, to a playdate with the kids at the park, to capturing you reading them their favorite book, giving a bath, or whatever ritual you want captured. However, these sessions are not Family sessions, and are not individual kids sessions, they are purely journalistic and meant to just document.
